As a YogaSpa Founder, I get to enjoy the daily trials and tribulations of owning a business: Verifying student memberships; Making sure my team has everything they need to run a smooth class; Making sure our spa clients have a relaxing appointment experience.
I OFTEN desire the chance to unplug and get away from the emails, calls, texts, and social media messages.
Where there is a desire there is an idea! So, I created my five steps to a DIY Yoga Retreat!
With these 5 EASY steps you can enjoy a few days to retreat in the comfort of your own home, or wherever you wish to escape to.
TIP ONE: SCHEDULE A WEEKEND
Take a moment to plan ahead. You are worth it. Choose a weekend and commit. Make this weekend a time where you will turn off your phone, set aside delicious recipes that you look forward to savoring from start to finish, and of course create a playlist of yoga classes.
We offer a few delightful options in my Effervescent Living Online YogaSpa.

TIP TWO: MORNING AND EVENING YOGA
Begin and end each day of your mini-retreat with yoga. Notice the benefits you may begin to feel in your mind and body, such as stress relief. According to studies found in Science Of Yoga, Yoga assists in lowering the stress hormone, cortisol. The more one practices yoga, the more measurable the benefits may be.
Of course, one weekend in a DIY Yoga Retreat may be the spark you need to begin a yoga practice.
TIP THREE: NURTURING ACTIVITY
Do something that excites you. Perhaps it is snuggling up in a corner diving into your favorite novel. Maybe you would love to walk on the beach or through a forest. Do you enjoy painting, sewing, arts and crafts, or writing your creative thoughts down in a journal? Pick a few activities that excite you and do them throughout your retreat.

TIP FOUR: MEALS THAT MATTER
Vegetarian cuisine is always my go to option to feeling good. Take a moment to create your favorite yoga retreat menu. I often search the internet for 12 fun, vegan or vegetarian recipes and play with them, such as this Cinnamon Baked Apples recipe. This is your chance to experience something new, or perhaps if you are already enjoying meals this way, mix and match and see what you can create on your own.
Playing with food is just as much fun as eating it!
Take it a step further and practice mindful eating:
As you create your meal, give thanks to everyone who may have been involved in delivering your food to you. Send gratitude to the farmer, to the delivery person, to the grocer, to the water and sun that helped it grow. Give gratitude to your food as you prepare it. When you are ready to eat, chew slowly and taste every bite, giving thanks to the nourishment your body is receiving as you enjoy your meal.
TIP FIVE: REST
Yes, the “R” is often omitted from our busy, productive, and exhausting lifestyle. Rest doesn’t necessarily mean sleep. You may choose to meditate, sip tea on your front porch while listening to the sounds around you, or you may sit in a swing and feel the wind softly caress your skin.
Commit to an activity that allows your mind to wander and be free. Let go of the “have to do’s” with a simple mantra (statement that you repeat) of “I have nothing to do, nowhere to go, and I accept this pleasure in my life.”
This is perhaps the most important step in your DIY yoga retreat.
Yoga is so much more than the poses that we hold during practice. Yoga assists us in learning a new way to live, from a space of ebb and flow. As life happens around us, we learn through yoga how to slow down, breathe, be present to what is, and enjoy life as it is, while we are in it.
May you enjoy your peaceful weekend created for you, by you.
