Decluttering Is A Journey, Not An Event

I shared with you that your home is a mirror of your soul and also how living clutter-free actually looks but how do we get there, how do we get to a clutter-free environment? Let’s explore.

Don’t have time to read? Listen to this info on the go on my podcast here.

Have you wanted to declutter your home or office for a while already? Have you read a book and/or some blog posts on how to start, listened to podcasts on what to do but still didn’t do anything?

Stuck in the cycle of busy hoping that one day there will be time for your and what you want?

You are not alone. PEACEFUL LIVING COACHING is here to support you!

The reason this happens is that a lot of people think decluttering is a huge project and they need to block off a weekend or a whole week to do it. But of course they don’t find such a big chunk of time in their busy calendars and besides, who wants to declutter for days on end? Not me and I think it’s safe to assume you don’t either.

It’s not a weekend-project

While you can do it this way, I advise against it. Most People want to do it this way because they think they can declutter their environment once and then be done with it. But that’s not how it works, clearing clutter is physically and mentally demanding and emotionally taxing.

My suggestion is to start small, with a few minutes a day because creating a clutter free environment is a journey not an event. With every item you release you let go of some mental and emotional clutter too, you need to have the time and space to be able to process those emotions.

Also, if you do it ‘a few minutes a day’ you are establishing a habit of releasing and organizing. Once you’ve reached a point where your home and office is mostly clutter free, it will stay that way because you have this habit in place.

If you spend a weekend or even an entire week decluttering your home, you will be so exhausted afterward (if you can keep it up) that you won’t do anything for a while, other than watching helplessly how all the clutter creeps back in.

It’s a Journey

Decluttering is not a one-time big event that you can do once, or that you can do perfectly, and then you are done. It is a journey, a journey of mostly small, maybe sometimes a few bigger, steps day after day.

Remember how I said last month it is about keeping your environment up-to-date with what is important in your life right now and since we all evolve and interests change our environment needs to evolve and change with us.

Clutter is like dishes, or laundry, or bathing, it’s an ongoing process of rinse and repeat, you are never fully decluttered but it gets easier over time. The less stuff you have the less cluttered your environment gets. You also get to a place where it becomes your lifestyle to live a clutter free life, it’s simply what you do.

At that point, you are in control of your stuff, the stuff doesn’t control you (anymore).

But to get there you have to get started, scrappy if needed, and then keep going, a few minutes a day…

If you are a regular reader of my blogs or listener of my podcast you know I say “a few minutes a day keep the chaos away”.

That’s also what helped me get started with my podcast is to allow myself to start as small as I had to and with whatever was available to me. My first few episodes I recorded with the headphones that came with my iPhone, even though I had a fancier microphone.

But I had tried out that fancy microphone but right away had technical issues. Instead of letting myself be held up by tech, I decided to go scrappier and just record on my headphones. I was several episodes in when I finally pulled out that microphone again and tackled the tech issues and since then I record my episodes with it.

What is keeping you from starting?

How could you overcome this obstacle or creatively move around it?

What limiting beliefs or roadblocks do you have or do you bump into?

The most common limiting belief: I have no time

The objection I hear most of the time is ‘I have no time’ to what I always say, you can start with as little as 5 minutes a day, everyone has 5 minutes. Even 5 minutes of decluttering is better than no decluttering at all, because as long as you tell yourself you have no time, nothing is happening.

With just a few minutes a day you get the ball rolling, you get some momentum, and soon you might do 10 minutes here and there. You will see the effect and then you start keeping certain areas clutter free and you just keep going, every single day a few minutes.

The more supportive your environment becomes, the more it frees up your time because if you are aware of it or not, every single thing in your environment takes your time and energy. The less you have the more energy and time you have.

How would it be, how would you feel if your home and office didn’t stress you out anymore but supported you and the things you need to do?

How would it be if you felt in control of your own life, especially now that the world out there seems to have changed so much and more than ever we don’t know how the future will look?

How would it be to wake up in a serene calm bedroom, to shower in a spa-like bathroom, get your coffee from a dirty-dish-free kitchen? How much more successful could you be if you started your day in an organized office and on a clutter free desk?

And by the way, my podcast episodes can help you get started, my solo episodes are  short enough that you can declutter a small area while listening to them.

All it takes for you is to start this journey and soon a few minutes a day keeps the chaos away.
