Accepting Life’s Invitations: Be There or Be Square

Accepting Life’s Invitations: Be There or Be Square: Every morning, we wake up to the internal human challenge of life. It’s a beautiful thing. It is simultaneously an invitation and an acceptance. Did we open our eyes to see the sunlight coming in through the window, or was the sunlight so lovely through our eyelids that we couldn’t wait to open our eyes and drink in more? Did we accept the invitation?

Transformative COURSES & WORKSHOPS that make integrating peaceful living, health and wellness easy, fun and affordable.

I didn’t make this up. It’s been happening as long as we’ve been alive to wonder about it. It is a natural human position in consciousness that we willfully embody. We participate in this exchange.

This is a philosophical start to where ever you are in your day, as you are reading this, but this is the juicy stuff that life is made of. All day long we are in an exchange with life – every breath, every step forward. There are so many places in the day where you can see this happen and test it out for yourself. It’s kind of like a big buffet, and I am certainly not the first person who has brought the concept into your awareness. It’s a classic.

Did you open the car door to get out, or did the neighbours cat call you over for a scratch?

Did you pick up that garbage in your front yard, or did your grass ask you for a hand?

Did you cook carrots for dinner, or did the orange of the carrots egg you on?

It feels a little silly to make a list of my examples, so I’ll let you fill in your own possibilities. I’ll let you stretch it out into your day, too. I’ll let you notice what matters to you. The first challenge together this month is to close your eyes and imagine all the ways life invites you, and you accept. You meet it half way. You receive.

All of those things you imagined just now, did they happen because you opened a car door? Or did they happen because you answered an invitation to participate in life?

At our Busy Mom’s Zoom Brunch a couple of months ago, our conversation boiled down to how a couple of us on the call had struggled with debilitating health issues. It doesn’t matter what or who, but just that although these issues are not entirely resolved, they are well managed. In fact, they are inspiring. In both cases, they have been the driving force behind the work we do now to help others. And in both cases, these health issues are the driving force behind the daily choices we make about our lives. I am one of those ladies, so my article this month is deeply personal.

Like the concept we’re exploring here today, I’m not the first person to describe or experience this situation. I have a health issue simmering on the back burner in my life. When I first discovered it, I was devastated. It won’t kill me, but it can be debilitating, and allopathic medicine was not an option for me. The side effects of the medication were not manageable. In seeking alternative solutions, I stumbled upon homeopathy, and the results for me were about more than relieving my symptoms. The lifestyle changes and worldview of homeopathy are so empowering.

I was excited to learn this medicine, start a practice and eventually begin to teach it. In almost 20 years of practice, I got to witness my patients not just feel better, but transform their lives and the world around them. It has been so rewarding. My patients are mostly women, and the changes they make in how they treat themselves educate their families and friends. More important though, is what they teach their children about the world.  We talk about these health trends all day long, and we see it in our media – that’s what sells these days – but I have spent the last twenty-five years seeing the same positive trajectory repeated over and over, successfully. It still inspires me.

It is quite simply this:

  1. Introduction of disease symptoms.
  2. The decision to treat these symptoms as naturally as possible.
  3. The decision to make the lifestyle changes required.
  4. Wellness and returned satisfaction in life, even if the disease persists.
  5. Personal empowerment.

It’s like a recipe where it’s hard to imagine how a simple flour, sugar and eggs mixture transforms into a beautiful cake. It’s definitely just desserts, especially if you ice your cake with the concept we are challenging ourselves to embody together today:

If life is inviting you to participate, do you reply?

The second challenge together this month is to notice that we embody this kind of empowerment as a collective as well. Just like we are not singular in our disease “states”, we are not alone in this success as a collective either. We are taking steps forward together. Think of one person you know – like we experienced at the Zoom brunch – and see how that person has achieved wellness and restored satisfaction in life.

It’s pretty life-affirming isn’t it? There are other people at this party, who believe what you do. They don’t just open the car door to do the work of wellness, they accept the invitation to participate in life. I expect the image you have in your mind of the person you know who experiences a health issue is smiling. It is natural to hold that image of them in your mind. That’s what you want for them, and with your entire life, you invite them to experience health and happiness.

It’s a beautiful thing.

We are still experiencing this on a global level with Covid. It has created a debilitating collective illness, and we have had to make adjustments. We have had to shift our behaviours and perspectives to create wellness and returned satisfaction. The operative word here is “create.” We had to create wellness, and we did so by empowering ourselves to responsible for our own health and happiness. It would not have occurred if we did not embody this natural human position.

This is big stuff, and it matters. It matters a lot, so let’s keep it simple and practical. We want to be able to repeat it every day without philosophising. We want to embody it.

My wish for you is that every morning, you experience the wonder of whether you just opened your eyes, or were you called to open your eyes and see something beautiful.

RSVP: be there or be square, Sunshines. You’re the life of the party.
