I’ll be honest with you, even though I’m from California, one of the first states to legalize marijuana, I was very skeptical about CBD. It’s meteoric rise in popularity in the marketplace, combined with what seemed like “snake oil” stories of healing sent off my skeptic alarm. Not to mention the whole marijuana thing…
WHAT EXACTLY IS CBD??
Because I do not believe in outright rejecting products (or ideas, or even opinions) without researching the topic I delved into finding out more about this miracle oil.
This blog, is a short and concise overview of my findings. I hope that it helps you make an informed decision about whether or not CBD can benefit you!
FIRST THINGS FIRST
CBD IS NOT MARIJUANA!! I REPEAT… CBD IS NOT MARIJUANA. IT IS ALSO NOT POT, GANGA, THE CHRONIC, REEFER OR ANY OF THE OTHER NICKNAMES THAT ARE GIVEN TO MARIJUANA.
CBD, “is one of 80 active Cannabidiol chemicals in the marijuana plant.” Volkow, Nora D. CBD is a “phytocannabinoid derived from cannabis species, which is devoid of psychoactive activity, with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic and chemopreventive activities.” U.S. National Library of Medicine
If you are like me, you are probably saying, “whhhaaattt???” If you are one of my science-minded readers – I love you and wish I was more like you!
Back to my point about the fact that CBD is NOT MARIJUANA! The first thing the folks over at NIH/ Pubchem tell us is that Cannabidiol, or CBD, does NOT have any psycho (affecting the mind) effects. In other words, it won’t get you high.
OKAY, I WON’T GET HIGH, BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE SUPPOSED HEALING PROPERTIES?
Right, so here is what the rest of the quote says:
- CBD has analgesic properties = It relieves pain. A meta-study (a study looking at the results of several other research studies) by Ethan B. Russo, “Cannabinoids in the Management of Difficult to Treat Pain,” shows that CBD proved to reduce the severity of pain in several different chronic pain situations: nerve pain, Rheumatoid Arthritis pain, Multiple Sclerosis-related pain, gastro-intestinal pain and topical skin pain, among others.
- An interesting fact is that these studies showed that non-psychoactive CBD is far more effective in treating pain than THC in psychoactive marijuana.
- CBD has anti-inflammatory properties = relieves pain and discomfort through reducing inflammation. This is like Ibuprofen.
- Cannabinoids (CBD) have been shown to reduce inflammation, and thus prevent further development of inflammation-related diseases, such as arthritis and colitis, hepatitis and generalized pain, “through the induction of multiple anti-inflammatory pathways.” Prakash Nagarkatti, et. al. 2009
- CBD is antineoplastic = inhibits the development of tumors. That’s right, I said tumors. Like in cancer. CBD is chemopreventive = prevents, reverses or blocks the progression of invasive cancer.
- According to the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology in 2017 preliminary research suggests that CBD is effective in inhibiting both the growth and spread of cancer tumors in eight different types of cancer.
- THIS RESEARCH IS PRELIMINARY AND THE PHARMACOLOGICAL DRUG TESTED IN THESE STUDIES IS NOT APPROVED FOR USE IN THE UNITED STATES. WHETHER YOU ARE IN THE U.S., OR A COUNTRY IN WHICH IT IS APPROVED, DO NOT SELF TREAT WITH CBD FOR CANCER, OR ANY OTHER SERIOUS HEALTH CONDITION, UNLESS UNDER A MEDICAL DOCTOR’S STRICT SUPERVISION – PREFERABLY AN ONCOLOGIST FOR CANCER TREATMENT.
- According to the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology in 2017 preliminary research suggests that CBD is effective in inhibiting both the growth and spread of cancer tumors in eight different types of cancer.
These studies, and many others like them, shed light on the pervasive health benefits of CBD. Once I looked at the studies, and saw the evidence of the benefits of CBD, I was definitely warming-up to the idea of its wide-spread effectiveness. When I also learned that many, many countries have approved the use of a wide-spectrum of CBD in everything from the treatment of pain to the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis, I realized that the effectiveness of this oil is real.
