LAUGHING FROM THE HEART: A LAUGHTER YOGA EXPERIENCE

Often when we think of laughter we think we must have a reason to laugh.  Maybe we think we need to hear a joke that is funny which will thereby create a chuckle or a snort.  Perhaps we require someone to physically tickle us to enjoy a belly laugh. 

What if I humor you with another idea?  What if we could laugh as easy as we breathe?  What if we could create an experience of an oxygenating, endorphin releasing, blood pressure lowering, good hearty laugh without provocation?  Wouldn’t that be something?

Allow me to introduce you to the idea of Laughter Yoga, not to be confused with modern day Yoga where one must wear sweat-wicking leggings on high-fashion yoga mats.  Laughter Yoga offers a unique combination of four key components that bring together one delightful 20 minute experience of pure joy and childlike playful exercises.

Created in 1995 by Cardiologist, Dr. Madan Kataria, Laughter Yoga began as an idea to help cardiac patients receive the benefits of an aerobic exercise without the need to over-exert their bodies post surgery.  Laughter is known for it’s healing benefits such as lowering blood pressure, elevating oxygen levels, and releasing endorphins.

We can create a healthy and happy body through multiple experiences of Laughter Yoga.

While creating Laughter Yoga, Dr. Kataria began with a few friends who agreed to meet with him at a local park to laugh.  They began at first with jokes, but quickly began to realize that not everyone found the jokes to be funny. In an effort to create complete inclusion of participants he began to create childlike exercises such as the art of using our imagination and improvisation to play.

Participants can now experience different exercises such as pretending to drive in a car laughing, or standing in a elevator giggling, all the through the art of imaginative play.  When paired with intentional breathing, clapping, and intentional movement, Laughter Yoga becomes quite the workout.

WHY LAUGHTER YOGA?

Laughter Yoga is open to all bodies and all languages, our laugh is truly a universal communicator.  Personally, as a Laughter Yoga Teacher, I utilize Laughter Yoga at Summits, Retreats, and Conferences as a modality to help connect people.  I have successfully experienced two day events where participants of the conference were spread out and not necessarily taking the initiative to meet others.  Through my gift of Laughter Yoga, I have had the pleasure of witnessing a room of strangers turn into a room of friends in a matter of two rounds of Laughter Yoga experiences. And, remember, friends are one of the best stress-relievers around!

In a world where most of us find connection online instead of face-to-face, we are missing the joys of true, valuable human connection.  This leads us to depressive states, feelings of loneliness, and even helplessness. Laughter Yoga can not be completed without three specific components; people, eye contact, and laughter. Thus, it is a truly simple way to make that human connection that is so important for healthy living.

No wonder it is a fantastic modality to utilize to bring others together and assist them in feeling more joy, energy, and true human connection.

Next time you may feel you are in a slump, grab a mirror, look into your fantastic eyes and laugh a hearty, jolly, Santa style belly laugh with YOURSELF! 🙂
