It’s Leo season, the element of Fixed Fire . It represents the middle of summer. Most of you are aware of the 4 seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. You may have even heard of the 4 elements: Fire , Earth , Air , and Water . But there is another piece that aligns us with the stars, the three modes: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Understanding these concepts can function much like a map on your quest to self-healing. They provide a point of reference for each Trip Around the Sun, and hopefully allow us a greater understanding of ourselves. For more insight on their meanings and how they influence each other, I would recommend reading my blog on the Fixed Earth Element.

Our Top 5 Tips for Peaceful Living
It is the time of Leo , which occurs between July 23rd and August 22nd. It’s the middle of our summer season and the Fire Element is burning hot. It’s time for us to bask in the sun-soaked days and feel the full effects of the Fixed Fire Element. When referring to the elements, the Fixed mode of each element represents the plans that we make. On its own, the element of Fire symbolizes transformation through action. It’s time to maximize these long summer days and do something about those plans. You can start with stepping outside and Nurturing yourself with Nature!
Once the Fire within each of us is ignited, it can be unstoppable. How can we learn to dance with our Fire if we don’t understand the flame? I have been an artist since the fifth grade. It was when Mrs. Grant, my fifth grade art teacher, first ignited my artistic Fire . She asked us to use crayon to recreate Starry Night by Vincent VanGogh. I remember this experience because it was the first time I realized that art could be anything, including a means of expression. The way the colors moved across the paper would change the way that I view art forever. This one creation lit a Fire within me that still continues to burn.

We all have that Fire that burns within. But remember that Fire , if left unattended, can burn everything in its path. We must not be deceived by the almost playful energy of fire’s dancing flames. Keep in mind that the same Fire that fuels your creativity and that keeps you warm at night can, and will, burn you just as quickly if you let it. On the other hand, if there is not enough energy to fuel the Fire it will slowly burn out. What Fire are you fueling today?…or what Fires are you allowing to burn out?
In my life, I was able to take this Fire that Mrs. Grant started and turn it into a career. I enjoyed helping young minds spark their creative interests. This fueled my creativity in a way that I had never imagined. I had found my calling! However, when tragedy struck a few years into my plan, it took these flames and turned them into an inferno. As I stood there, watching the plans I had for myself turn into a pile of ash, I realized that I was no longer able to simply be the spark. I knew it was time to take action, so I quit.
When I came across the opening for an Art Teacher at the local school for at risk youth, it seemed like a good fit. I no longer had to explain my raging Fire , my students understood it… they were battling their own inner fires. I had found a way to match the intensity of my flame and stay safely out of its reach. My first year as an Alternative School Teacher was one of the most powerful lessons of my life; we laughed, we cried, we began to heal using art as our therapy. Together, we created MAGIC!
I tried everything that I could to avoid letting my grief consume me. Only this wasn’t the type of Fire that would eventually burn out, I had to learn to work with the flames. Somewhere along my path to self-healing I started grief counseling. I was beginning to heal, but despite all of my efforts, I still could not woosah my way into happiness. “You can’t just namaste this energy out of you” is the exact quote that was said to me in a grief session. GAME CHANGER! It was time to take action and fight Fire with Fire . I needed to figure out how to release this energy before the inferno burned me from within. There was no more talking or thinking about it…I was going to have to physically DO something about it.
