HOW TO PIVOT: 4 TIPS FOR ADAPTING TO CHANGE

There are times in life that we just have to pivot. This is an important lesson I learned during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Today as I work from on the back porch feeling wind come through the screen and with my feet propped up. I count myself considerably lucky. Right now, we are in a time where fear has done one of two things, cripple us or made us soar to new heights.

We have either locked ourselves in our homes peeping out the blinds at our neighbors constantly on edge.Or we have thrown ourselves into a new project or reinvented ourselves in order to adapt to our new way of life.

My question is where do you fall? Because at the end of the day, hun, this too shall pass. And when it does, what side of the fence are you going to be on?

A Lesson From Friends

One of my favorite TV shows is Friends (I could watch it a million times 🙂 ). I love the goofy cast and some of the messages the show promotes.

My favorite episode is when Ross and the gang are trying to get a love-seat up a long staircase and Ross keeps telling everyone one to PIVOT..

Which is apparently the new trending term in the  world of business: Being able to Pivot.

What does it actually mean???

According to Dictionary.com, the verb “Pivot” means to “turn on, or as if on, a pivot.”

A Twist on the Meaning

Right now, in our current situation, it means being able to adapt.

For entrepreneurs, it means to take your same business model and change direction to meet  the needs of your clients. For instance, a lot of in-person personal trainers have taken their business model and made it an online service.

Companies have gone from making car interiors to making protective masks. You do what you must do to survive. And this can apply not only to your business but your life especially  when it comes to fitness goals.

Let me put it in different terms. You don’t keep doing something if it’s not working right???

Like if you signed up for a fitness program and  you were doing everything by the book and you were not having any results, wouldn’t you try to find a different way to successfully achieve your goals.

Four Things You Need to Pivot Effectively

But, it’s easier said than done. So what do you have to possess in order to be adaptable or be able to pivot when necessary?

  • Numero Uno, you must be FLEXIBLE. You must be willing to go with the flow. If you are too rigid you can get “stuck”  in your own way and not be able to make the changes necessary to keep your head in the game.

Consistency is second!!!! If you are going to pivot you must realize making changes takes consistency. It’s going to take time to see results, so you must be consistent about working. Whether it’s in your business, your job, your family or maybe working on fitness goals you can’t expect to make changes and see results happen overnight.

It takes daily focus and work to get to your outcome.

  • Staying positive is probably the most important thing you can do!!! In a time of chaos you want to remain calm and focus on the silver lining even if it is small. If you focus only on problems then you’re going to get mentally stuck. This will make it very difficult to push forward and you may not be able to move at all.
  • Take it a day at a time!!! Listen, Rome wasn’t built in a day!!! As corny as that sounds, its obviously true.   Focus on the moment at hand and do things day by day. Always keep your end goal in sight, but focusing on daily tasks will make it less overwhelming!!!

And remember this to shall pass!!!!! You got this!

  1. I like how you mentioned that you should take overwhelming situations one day at a time. I moved, got laid off, and got a new job all within the past two months. Learning to tackle one day at a time will definitely help me to be a bit calmer during this transitional period.
