Are you a natural beauty lover who refuses to use damaging chemicals in your hair and on your skin? For years, home beauty remedies have been handed down to me. But, do they actually work?
Turns out, yes! Here are 6 old-school DIY natural beauty hacks that are backed by science.
AVOCADO AND MAYONNAISE CONDITIONER: NOT JUST FOR SANDWICHES!
Why is this super simple combo amazing for your hair? Avocados are packed with vitamin B, which promotes hair growth, and vitamin E, which repairs damage to your scalp. Mayonnaise is made with egg yolks, which are loaded with the amino acid L-cysteine. This gives your hair shine, strength, and structure.
If you’re thinking, “avocados are kind of expensive,” think again. This home beauty treatment will cost you much less than an expensive salon deep conditioning!
HOW TO:
- Mash up one avocado (or substitute a cup of mayonnaise) and combine it with one egg yolk and 1/4 cup of olive oil (optional).
- Mix in a little water until you have a paste-like consistency and massage onto damp or wet hair.
- Pile your hair on top of your head and secure loosely.
- Run a towel under hot water, wring out, and wrap your hair in the hot towel.
- Let sit for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
VINEGAR RINSE: A TWO-IN-ONE HOME BEAUTY REMEDY FOR YOUR HAIR
Rinse your hair with vinegar to treat dandruff: Apple cider vinegar kills fungus. Dandruff is caused by a yeast infection in your skin. The apple cider vinegar is used for its natural acidity to adjust the pH balance on the skin as close to neutral as possible. Vinegar can also help clear up excess product residue.
Now that’s a two-in-one bonus for this natural beauty remedy!
HOW TO:
- Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of water.
- Pour over wet hair in the shower (after shampooing) and rinse thoroughly.
- Condition your hair as normal.
HONEY AND SUGAR EXFOLIATING SCRUB: A SWEET WAY TO DIY YOUR SKINCARE
Sugar is exceptional in removing the outer layer of skin cells that are usually dead. Removing this excess skin leads to the regeneration of new cells. Additionally, the use of honey adds many therapeutic benefits, including antimicrobial properties.
HOW TO:
- Mix 2 tablespoons of brown sugar with 1 tablespoon each of olive oil and honey. This scrub can be used on your face, lips, and body.
OLIVE OIL: ITALIAN WOMEN’S FAVORITE NATURAL BEAUTY REMEDY
The cuticles around our nails tend to get very dry, and lose their capacity to retain water easily. Olive oil makes for an excellent solution to this problem.
HOW TO:
- Warm about 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a bowl (in the microwave) for about 30 seconds, and then let cool slightly.
- Soak your fingernails in the oil for 15 minutes.
- Massage the oil into your nails and cuticles in a circular motion until it’s all absorbed.
- Buff your nails with a nail buffer or a clean, dry cotton washcloth.
IBUPROFEN AS AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOR ACNE
To relieve those painful pimples, get your hands on a liquid ibuprofen capsule.
HOW TO:
- Start with one liquid ibuprofen gel capsule.
- Puncture a hole in it using a pin.
- Once you release the ibuprofen serum from the capsule, apply it to a pimple that’s bothering you and leave it on for about 5 minutes.
- This will not only help with the pain, but alleviate the redness as well!
OUR FAVORITE NATURAL BEAUTY REMEDY FOR UNSIGHTLY BLACKHEADS: TOOTHPASTE & BAKING SODA
This easy, home beauty tip helps remove blackheads fast. No one wants to have blackheads, ever, no matter who you are!

- Then with a soft toothbrush (preferably new), gently rub your nose for 3 minutes in circular swirls.
- Wash it off with warm water.
