Happy New Year Lovelies – As we reflect on not only a new year but a NEW DECADE now is the time to take note and be mindful of people, places and things in our lives that may no longer be serving us. A good way to quiet the mind and reflect is with a social media detox.
In today’s day and age our idle moments are dedicated more and more to our gadgets – especially our phones and SOCIAL MEDIA. Yes, social media has built bridges because it allows us to communicate effortlessly. But, things made easily can also swiftly wither away. Aside from that, it can adversely affect our health. It can contribute to emotional stress as we compare and despair over the online lives of celebrities and others. We can even become addicted to our devices. This can affect your productivity in real life, decrease your time with loved ones and lead to feeling unmotivated at work.
Being productive and living your best life is important, and it isn’t just about getting your work or paperwork done. It is also about how you utilize your time on things that matter. By that we mean those activities that give your life more meaning such as fostering a relationship with your friends, family, and significant other. Or, you could read a book during your spare time which can improve your imagination and vocabulary.
Here are some tips on how to lessen your time on social media and increase your productivity in real life!
BLOCK THE CATALYST
The first step to getting started with your social media detox plan is to control yourself. I know, it’s not easy, especially when it has already been part of your daily habits. But, just like choosing nourishing foods over junk foods, you have to omit the substance that is creating chaos in your body and life.
There are several ways to achieve this depending on how much you want to stop yourself from doing it.
- Delete the social media app you use the most
- Or, set an alarm to limit your use. You can start from 20 minutes then you can slowly reduce the time until you are ready to delete it in your life.
- If you want to keep abreast of what’s going on in the world, tune in to the news on your television or radio instead of Facebook or Instagram.
- Have conversations with your friends to find out about the latest celebrity gossip if that’s your thing.

ORGANIZE YOUR WORK
- Arrange your office, organize your papers, and write daily affirmations posted on your table or at the side of your monitor’s screen.
- Placing a healthy potted plant near your desk is also a great idea to give your office an organic vibe and lively mood.
- Systematize your work process to ease the flow of your tasks as this will help you lessen stress and give you more free time to allocate for your relaxation exercises.
- But the most important thing is to stop checking your phone every seconds while you are working. You may feel the urge sometimes, but try to focus more on your work and goals.
USE A TO-DO LIST
One of the best ways to be productive every single day is to keep up with your goals. To do that, make a list of the things that you need to finish each day. You can organize them into two categories: the first for daily tasks and the second one for weekly tasks (these tasks are done once or twice a week, and they can be repeated or not). Oversee your work in a week, and as you go along, you can finish them without breaking a sweat.
That’s a good sign for you!
Sometimes when we feel stressed and overwhelmed because of a heavy workload, we can look to our social media to feel relaxed. This is a big misconception. because doing this can increase your stress level and it can worsen the strain on our eyes.
Try this relaxation technique to counter the habit of turning to social media for relaxation:
Close your eyes, focus on yourself, visualize something that brings you comfort, and control your breathing by inhaling and exhaling deeply. Stand up, shake your body, collect your thoughts, and then get back on track.
Social media is not the villain here, it is our inability to control ourselves 🙂 But, it is never too late to make adjustments in our lives and I believe that you can do it!
Cheers to a new decade and in achieving your best life this year!
