Summer’s here, and I’m livin’ in my studio, almost like it’s a getaway home. It’s a big room with lots of sunlight, and one half is very comfortable sitting area. When it’s hot out, this becomes my cool and breezy hideout. I only leave when I need to cook or actually sleep. I can work here, yoga here, and create here. My home is a back split, so it is half underground. The windows are high in the room and big, but ground level outside, which celebrates my back yard garden like two masterpiece paintings. The colours are just so very Van Gogh, and in the morning the sun hits the glass rods on my torch table like a symphony.
We talk a lot about the “sweet spot”, or being in the zone during our time together each month. For me, being in my studio like this is complete immersion in my creative space and process. It’s sacred ground, and also ground zero for the glass pieces I’ll design this year. As I sit here now, and you’re giving me the opportunity to luxuriate in this room, I notice for the first time that what happens here is totally different than the exchange I’ve naturally created with the rest of my house.
Upstairs is comfortable and inspiring, but also more structured and functional. Daily life and movement are more obvious there. I also notice that I care for my studio space differently. There’s no pile-up filing, no drive-by recycling, and no things on their way to somewhere tomorrow. There is definitely more of the present moment available here in my studio. I didn’t plan that, but that’s the magic offering from an intentional creative space. It will gladly communicate something about your truest self – who you are, really.
This will be that moment where we pause together, and have a look around, and be present to where we are. A warning at this point of interest, though, too. Don’t be self-judgey! It’s really easy to fall down that hole when we look at our homes. The point of interest here, is that we are just looking for that starting place in our minds, the “you are here” on the map.
Look around. Take a few bonus breaths, while you’re at it. Be here.
What do you see? Notice some details, especially the things about your space that make you feel good. Even more important, are the things that make you feel good about yourself. That’s the sweet spot we’re really seeking.
Our goal with this observation is to see and hear what our environment is communicating. Just like our bodies, our homes are directly connected to our unconscious mind. The best part about this exercise is that, just like our bodies, this is an open-hearted conversation that goes both ways. It is an exchange of information where, like your body, your home is a way for you to positively influence your unconscious mind to work it’s magic and create the positive results you want in your life.
To say that more directly, you can read your home for where your unconscious mind is on the map, and you can use your home to lead your unconscious mind to where you consciously want to live on that map of your own life.
It’s pretty cool. It’s also pretty wily. You don’t even need a general contractor to renovate. You can have the dream home that’s locked into your mind’s eye by the end of the work day. You don’t even need a psychologist. Heck, if you really get good at this, you’ll put me out of a job too. You won’t need to go to your Homeopath very often either! Taking intentional and creative care of your home like this will absolutely have a positive effect on your health and sense of well-being.

Alright, let’s move on. It’s too exciting! I’ll bet your unconscious mind is starting to do a little jig in there, and it works at lightening speed. We have spent a lot of time historically learning this language, tracking it, and then creating more theories and “reasons” for the resistance we have to health and success – as many as there are to explain our success. What we came here to do together today, was to use our own creative environment to reflect our positive reality, so we can use that to create more of the same.
First, do a fast inventory. Where are you succeeding, and where are you failing. Keep it that simple. Better, what gives you a “yes” and what gives you a “no”?
Then, do a fast declutter. Set a timer, do 15 minutes only. Get that reflection of whatever you dislike or judge out of plain sight. It’s a constant confirmation of what is lacking or false about you. You want to have only what you want to be true about you visible. Throw the “no” in a closet if you have to. We are keeping up to unconscious lightening, remember. Go-go- go!
And finally, find some things that represent something you LOVE about yourself and hang them up on the walls. With each piece of visual stimulus, you are creating the truth about you. If you create a positive reflection of you in your environment, your unconscious mind will bring you more of the same. It’s just natural.
Our unconscious mind is 100% focused on protecting us from falsehood, from what does not serve us, or what causes us harm. If we do not speak its language or hear its suggestions, it has to push that information to the places you notice it the most – your success, your results, and your perception of self – to give you the opportunity to make a change. The other great thing about the unconscious mind is that it will gladly and prolifically replicate the truth, every single time, and without fail. When you are intentionally creating your future in your home studio, your unconscious will paint in the details with flying colours.
What do you want to be?
What do you want to become?
What do you want to feel?
What is your favourite thing about yourself?
You are Life’s masterpiece. Hang yourself all over your walls. Create.
