Description automatically generated is a powerful symbol.  It is a pure, clear, and transparent element that may take an endless amount of shapes and sizes. Let’s take a deeper look at some of the lessons that water Shape

Description automatically generated may offer us: Emotions can be exhausting! At least, that’s what we’ve been made to think. But why is that? 

People may choose to suppress their emotions for a variety of reasons, including a lack of self-esteem or confidence, a desire to prevent getting hurt or hurting others, or a way of avoiding revealing weakness.

Well, I am here to tell you that ignoring your emotions can be bad for your health! 

If you hide your feelings, you won’t be able to have meaningful relationships with the people in your life. Not to mention how tough it is to deal with controversy when there is a lack of communication. As we all know, if a problem is not resolved, it is more likely to be repeated. When anger and resentment fester, they might lead you right back where you started. To the confrontation you tried to avoid in the first place! You may also start avoiding people and situations that have made you uncomfortable, which may cause to you miss out on various relationships and experiences. How often have you been pushed to engage in a superficial conversation with someone rather than confront the elephant in the room?

Emotional suppression may become so second nature in our day-to-day life that we aren’t even aware of it. Feelings are suppressed in our culture. This is because most of us have been taught since childhood to keep our emotions under wraps. In our society, showing your emotions is a sign of weakness. For the most of my life, I allowed myself to experience great guilt about being an emotional being. I assumed there was something wrong with me.

I believed that by expressing my anger or crying, I was wrong.  Despite this, one realization was the most helpful to my growth. One epiphany ended the negative cycle, allowing me to develop stronger ties with individuals I cared about and inspiring me to live a happier, more mindful life. 

The turning point occurred when I chose to stop ignoring my feelings and instead confront them.

Someone once told me a story about a village of Tibetan Monks who all had diabetes at the same time. One of the most important things Buddhists teach is to be kind to your enemies. They say to love and forgive your enemies. So it’s basically putting down your anger toward the opponent and loving them right away. But when this happens in the mind, the body’s immune system responds by making endorphins. Endorphins are the body’s own form of morphine. They make you feel numb and change how the body uses glucose. When there are a lot of endorphins in the blood, glucose levels go up and insulin production goes down. This is what causes Type 2 Diabetes. They thought of it as a  shortcut, because they were able to skip being angry and go straight to being kind and forgiving. It’s like telling your mind, “I am not angry,” only your body doesn’t agree. Your immune system can’t be manipulated.

It’s now Summer, which means it’s time to let your emotions run wild! It’s time to get to work designing the life you want. What type of life do you wish to lead? What drew you to this post?
