It’s time for Virgo season, the element of Mutable Earth . Summer is now coming to an end, and we are nearing the halfway mark of the four season cycle we are all familiar with: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. What you may or may not know is that within this cycle we have the three modes: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. To understand this cycle even further we incorporate the 4 elements: Fire , Earth , Air , and Water . This may seem confusing at first but I promise it will all make more sense!
Let’s start from the very beginning. Both the wheel of the zodiac and the cycle of the seasons move in a never-ending pattern, in other words: a circle. If you are a visual person grab a napkin, pencil, pen, paper bag, etc. and follow along. Sometimes you just have to try it yourself for it to all make sense! Time to draw your circle. Nothing in life is perfect so give it a whirl… Divide your circle in half horizontally, from left to right . Now divide your circle again, only this time vertically, from top to bottom. The image you have drawn represents the cycle of the Four Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Spring is represented in the bottom left quadrant, Summer is in the bottom right quadrant, Fall in the top right quadrant and Winter is in top left quadrant. If it helps you to label these, GO AHEAD!

Now it’s time to dive into the 3 modes: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. Each of the 4 seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter are divided into 3 equal parts. Please divide your four quadrants into 3 equal parts, or as close to equal as you can make them. The image you have drawn should resemble a pizza cut into 12 slices. Yum! Let’s talk about those toppings, you have your 4 seasons labeled but what about the 3 equal parts? Starting in the Spring quadrant (bottom left) begin the labeling of the zodiac… Aries , Taurus , Gemini . If you are familiar with an analog clock Aries sits between the numbers 8 and 9. The modes define the beginning, middle and end of each of the four seasons. Aries is the beginning, Taurus is the middle and Gemini is the end. Continue to label the entire wheel. As you can see, the season we are in, greatly impacts how the 4 elements: Fire , Earth , Air , and Water and the 3 modes can interact with each other. As an example, the Middle of Spring: Fixed Earth and the End of Summer: Mutable Earth , express themselves very differently.
The beginning of a season, also known as the Cardinal Mode, represents the introduction or creation of something new, our ideas. The middle of the season, or Fixed Mode, is the time for making plans and to bring our ideas to life. Then we have our Mutable Mode, our finishing touches or last minute tweaks needed for our plans to come to fruition. And the cycle continues: Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable…

So far, on This Trip Around the Sun, we have rooted our values with the Fixed Earth Element of Taurus , worked on our communication with the Mutable Air Element of Gemini , explored our feelings while discovering the Cardinal Water Element of Cancer and learned to embrace our active energy with the Fixed Fire Element of Leo . It’s time now to add our finishing touches by analyzing and digesting our plan so it can become a reality. We now welcome the Mutable Earth Element of Virgo .
If you live in the Northern Hemisphere as like I do, you will have passed the Summer Solstice which marks the longest day of the year and we are beginning our journey toward shorter days and cooler nights. Virgo Season (August 23rd and September 22nd ) will be experienced differently depending on where you are located. For instance, I have been fortunate throughout my life to have lived in numerous geographical locations and I can honestly say that no two areas are alike. From Midwest cornfields as far as the eye could see, to the sand soaked days of the East Coast, the warm summer nights of the South and the cool forests breeze of the Pacific Northwest.
There are several things that I’d taken for granted while growing up back east. Things like the night sky being lit up like the 4th of July with Fireflies! Being able to eat fresh catfish plucked right out of the lake and the smell of the rain during a thunderstorm. All the while I was being introduced to new normals, like the beauty of the Redwood trees, the majestic feeling of a mountainscape and the power of the river. In my travels I have noticed quite a few differences of course, mainly in the landscapes, or as I like to call it, the Mutable Earth . One of the biggest differences that I noticed from place to place was the food, from the menu to the preparation and all the way down to the ingredients. What we feed ourselves, mind, body and spirit, truly matters. Mutable Earth is the time for analyzing and digesting our plans. We are preparing for the changing of the seasons, from Summer to Fall, our time of harvest. How do you want to present yourself to the world?
I was led to the understanding of Virgo when I decided to further explore holistic healing in my late 20’s. Changing my lifestyle transformed what healthy meant to me. I began to pay attention to what my body needed both internally and externally. It is this understanding that has helped me create the platform from which I teach. We are all unique and express ourselves differently depending on the season we are in. Virgo helps us focus on our own health. Whatever it was that brought you here does not matter.
