Ah motivation, what could we possibly achieve without it?
It’s the force that drives us to act. And yet, we so often get carried away doing things that don’t bring us true fulfillment.
At a high level, it is an emotional reaction that spikes inside us when we believe we are about to experience something enjoyable and rewarding.

But when looking at it more deeply, science shows there are two types of motivation and they can bring about different results.
The first type of motivation is called extrinsic motivation. As the name suggests, it is dependent on external factors or rewards to make us act. Simple examples of external rewards? Money and status!

While we are all — to some degree — motivated by external rewards, the problem with this type of motivation is that we are rarely able to control the size or measure of it. And so, the relationship ends up being one of dependency.
Then we have another type of motivation which is where the real magic happens…intrinsic motivation!
This is our natural tendency to seek out novelty, to challenge our capacity, to explore, to learn. Studies show that this drives enhanced performance, creativity, and even helps us manage stress better.
A simple example of intrinsic motivation? Pursuing your project for your own self-improvement and personal growth.
The reason why this is so powerful is because we don’t depend on anything other than what is truly important for us, making us more resilient and creative.
When looking at the science behind intrinsic motivation, it turns out there are three necessary conditions we must meet: a sense of autonomy, competence, and meaning.
In this vlog (posted above), I cover each of the three aspects highlighting both its importance and power. Living off intrinsic motivation may well be the biggest gift you can give to yourself and those around you!
