3 Keys to Unlock the Secrets of the Hidden Job Market

If you are like so many others in this economy, you have discovered that searching the job boards and applying online for a new position has a low rate of success for job seekers.

Let’s face it, big companies pay thousands of dollars to run ads and receive hundreds of resumes for each opening. They invest in computer programs that scan resumes for keywords and screen out resumes that are different.

Job boards work well for people who use keywords that are in demand, like special certifications and licenses and want to stay in the same industry doing the same job

But, for the rest of us, finding a new career we love is much harder.

Have you ever wanted to interview at a certain company and wondered how people get jobs there when there never seems to be an opening?

USE THE HIDDEN JOB MARKET

Find great companies and great jobs by using the Hidden Job Market.

Fact: Growing companies hire when the right talent appears; they may never need to advertise to fill positions.

Working with CEOs and other thought leaders for nearly two decades as an executive recruiter, I learned that companies often hire people even when they were “not hiring” or had “no openings” if that individual could help them solve a problem.

Instead of trying to make your skills and experiences fit an online job description and limiting yourself to companies who are running ads, while competing with all the others who are also applying for that same position, find companies that need the skills you already possess to help them make money, save money, or solve a problem.

There is a big difference between what skills employers say they WANT to hire, vs. the skills they WILL hire.

Why limit yourself to companies that are looking for a particular skill set in a specific range of time? Find the openings in the hidden job market through networking.

1) Networking is Key! Put together a strategic plan to find companies that can use someone with your skills to solve a problem. Use free resources online to build a list of companies you are interested in.

2) If you don’t have a network for introductions, introduce yourself. For-profit companies are in business to make a profit. Using platforms like LinkedIn have conversations with people in the industries in which you are interested and let them know how you can help them make a profit.

Nonprofits and government institutions are mission-based. Show how your experiences add value to their goals.

The U.S. Small Business Administration says there were over 31 million small businesses in 2020. Over 95% of businesses in the U.S. have fewer than 500 employees. This is where the majority of Americans work.

3) Look for small to midsize companies using resources on the internet. Smaller companies are able to quickly recognize talent and make faster decisions to hire someone like you!

You can find the job of your dreams through using these three keys to networking to learn about opportunities with companies you may not have considered.

Take that first step and Unlock the doors to the hidden job market and find a new career you love!
