A New Way to Create New Year Resolutions

The holidays offer an opportunity to reflect on what matters. For most of us, work slows down, we spend more time with family, and we participate in annual traditions. One of those traditions is setting new year resolutions.

Resolutions can serve as a guide for the new year.  They help us focus on changes we want to make or goals we want to achieve.  But all too often, resolutions are fleeting.  Come spring, they have faded into the background or disappeared altogether.

Discover COMMUNITIES hosted by our PLW experts and surround yourself with like-minded individuals looking to live a peace infused, healthy life.

So how can we turn resolutions into achievable outcomes? How can we create positive, sustainable changes and realized goals?

Start by connecting with your heart.

An important first step to creating lasting resolutions is to identify your core values and passions. Start by asking yourself what really matters to you.  Any quality that reflects what is important to you is a core value.  Core values can include gratitude, family, honesty, or perseverance.  When you are clear on your core values and passions, you can align your resolutions or goals with those qualities.  This will spark motivation to take action and stay on track.

Allow yourself to dream big.

Once you’ve identified your core values and passions, get quiet and dream big.  Start to imagine your year ahead and your future-self.  Where are you living? What are you doing? What do you love about life? What accomplishments are you most proud of?  Allow yourself to tap into excitement as you connect with your hopes and dreams for the future.

Let your dreams inspire goals.

Once you connect with your long-term vision, it is easier to identify a tangible resolution or goal. In some cases, you may even be able to extract the small steps you can begin to take now.  After visualizing your future, consider the answers to these questions:

What do I really want in my life?

Why do I want it?

What small steps can I take to get it?

What support will I need?

Which of my inner qualities will help me stay in action?

Create your plan.

The answers to these questions will form into a plan. You’ve clarified your desired outcome or goal, why it is important, the actions you can take to move toward your goal, the people who can support your, and the personal strengths and values that will help you stay motivated and accountable.

More Goal Setting Tips

Begin with the end in mind.

Always clarify the most desirable outcome. See yourself living it, being it, and feeling it fully!

Write your goals and resolutions in present tense.
This is a key factor to manifesting. When you write your goals and speak your goals in the present tense, you naturally begin to act like they are happening.

Make goals/resolutions positive and affirming.
Focus on what you want, not what you don’t want.

Be clear and concise, specific and simple.

Decide when you want to achieve the big goal and small steps. This will help you stay on track and reward your success.

Share your goals!
Ask friends or family for encouragement and support. This will help you stay motivated and accountable.
