How to Make This Your SUMMER OF FITNESS: Summer, where the sun is shining, the days are longer, the kids are out of school and the daily routine is feeling more relaxed. The lazy and carefree days of summer.
Schedules are slowing down, and you finally have time to relax and get your workouts in, right?
With the kids home full-time and in between taking them to swim or music lessons, soccer practice, dance or art class, the list goes on and on. The summer days may not always feel so relaxed. Add in all of the extra cooking, cleaning and keeping the children or teens entertained you may find yourself with the dilemma of finding time to get to the gym. Or finding any quiet time at all to fit in your workouts at home.
Stuck in the cycle of busy hoping that one day there will be time for your and what you want?
You are not alone. PEACEFUL LIVING COACHING is here to support you!
With the kids home full time over summer, how does the busy mom find time for workouts?
Summer of fitness begins by including the entire family. Get everyone involved in the summer of fitness by balancing it with cardio, strength type of exercises and stretching. Most of all, make it fun! Sharing these experiences and quality time together makes for time to connect, make great memories and encourages staying fit and healthy!
Take advantage of the longer days and better weather to venture outside! This is a great way to get your cardiovascular exercise in. Thirty minutes 3-5 days a week is the goal.
For those really hot days, take longer walks early in the morning which is a great way to get the body moving, the blood pumping, burning calories and resulting in better sleep at night. Or take a walk later in the evening after dinner, maybe catch the beautiful sunset, talk about your day with the family or make plans for tomorrow while on your walk. It also benefits you by burning off any extra calories from dinner.
Or maybe bike riding with the family?
I would always love to do this with my children. Our favorite was a bike ride around the neighborhood or on one of the trails near our home. Now that they are grown it is still one of my favorite things to do with them or on my own. Taking in the views, while getting a great workout is always fun!
Benefits of bike riding include stimulating and improving your heart, lungs and circulation. Increasing and improving your cardiovascular system. Bicycling strengthens your heart muscles, increases leg muscles and lowers resting pulse.
Soccer, roller hockey, roller skating, basketball, beach volleyball or Summer Days at the pool are always fun with the family. Swim a few laps, play some volleyball with the kids or play a family game of baseball.
Swimming in the summer weather is one of my favorites!
I love going to the beach for some boogie boarding, surfing, or just swimming. If you’re not into swimming you could go for a long beach walk, bike ride or a good old game of smashball or Frisbee can get everyone moving and having fun!
The benefits of swimming. It is one of the best exercises you can do. It works your entire body and increases your heart rate without stressing your body. Tones muscles, builds strength and endurance. So hit the pool, the beach, the lake or the lagoon!
Incorporate strength training two times a week into your summer of fitness. A mini circuit at the park or in your backyard can always be fun. A 20 minute circuit or obstacle course with different stations Load up on squats, push ups, lunges and crunches. Set the timer for 1 minute increments until you get your 20 minutes in.
On those really hot and extreme heat days use the gym or your home gym or family room for some strength training in the much needed air conditioning! Many of the activities under cardiovascular strength also incorporate strength such as swimming and bike riding.
Benefits of strength training include increased strength, increased muscles, stronger bones, burns calories, can lower risk of injury and can boost your mood.
Yoga class outdoors
I love taking yoga classes outside such as the beach, bay or a park. I often teach yogafit to my clients in their backyard or at a park. It’s a great way to get some fresh air, enjoy the outdoors, and to get in some flexibility, stretching and strength movements.
Benefits of Yoga helps increase physical fitness, improve cardiovascular health, manage stress and anxiety, increase muscle strength and overall flexibility. It’s also great at helping to boost your mood!

Another option for increasing flexibility is to try to incorporate a 10 minute stretching routine 2 x a week which will also give some of these great benefits. Make sure to include some deep breathing and relaxation!
Summer of fitness. Just keep it moving!
Sometimes just getting out and exploring can be a great way to stay active and fit. Walking at art festivals, the zoo, parks, fairs, museums, music festivals, or finding a new place in town to explore can be part of your Summer of Fitness with a whole lot of fun!
If your Summer has a full schedule the busy mom can do the summer of fitness with some creativity. Get on a routine of 4-5 days a week of movement for 30 minutes a day. Leaving time for some rest, relaxation and lazy days of summer. Have fun, create memories and enjoy the journey!
